Palau Fugit: A Captivating Fusion of History and Modernity in Costa Brava

Palau Fugit, a destination hotel in Spain’s Costa Brava region, is a unique blend of old and new. The architectural brilliance of Isern Associats and the design intervention by El Equipo Creativo have transformed a disused 18th-century palace into a stunning hotel. The experience is divided into two parts – the original palace and its arched courtyard, and a new annex connected by a terrace.

The designers have successfully preserved the rustic charm of the site’s original architecture, drawing inspiration from Girona’s Barri Vell district. The historic stone façades, hidden cul-de-sacs, porticoes, and stone ramparts are beautifully incorporated into Palau Fugit. At the same time, the hotel pays homage to the vibrant spirit of the Spanish city, taking cues from the colorful townhouses along the River Onyar and Girona’s famous springtime celebration.

The rooms in El Palauet (the palace) and El Pavelló (the annex) showcase this duality. In El Palauet, guests are transported back to the fin de siècle period. The rooms are adorned with chaise longues, bespoke rattan beds, custom marble dressing tables, and rich upholsteries in warm color palettes. The gothic arches, porticoes, carved balcony shutters, and ceiling roses add to the grandeur.

On the other hand, El Pavelló exudes a contemporary vibe with its curated art pieces and meticulous material pairings. Handmade terracotta tiles, local ceramics, and wood create a mid-century aesthetic, capturing the essence of the craft ateliers of Costa Brava.

The shared spaces at Palau Fugit, including the oasis-like terrace with a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, library, and reception room, exude an intimate ambiance befitting the former residence. The restaurant, Casa Heras, is a nostalgic tribute to the past with its copper pots and pans and antique dresser. However, modernity is not forgotten, as the space is adorned with present-day furnishings in stone, wood, and textiles.
