Tranquil Seafoam Green Haven: PJ Lobster Glasses Store Transformed by El Departamento

The PJ Lobster glasses store in Barcelona has been transformed into a tranquil haven by the Spanish interior studio El Departamento. The store’s walls, floors, and stuccoed ceilings have been carefully finished in a range of subtle variations in tone and texture, all in shades of seafoam green. The result is a calming and immersive shopping experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

“The human eye is able to distinguish more different shades of green than any other color,” explains El Departamento to urdesign. “That’s because, deep inside us, we’re still hunters from the prehistoric era.”

“So that’s what we wanted to aim for here, not to hunt anything but to recover the challenging visual exercise of exploring a wide range of greens.”

El Departamento’s exploration of various textures within the store, ranging from the minute to the grand, was heavily influenced by Charles and Ray Eames’s captivating short film Powers of Ten. This film delves into the vast scales of the universe, providing inspiration for the studio’s meticulous approach.

The studio meticulously selected materials that would embody the desired textures, from the velvety micro-cement with its fine grains adorning the floor, to the hand-applied rough textured plaster on the walls. Each step was executed with utmost care and precision, ensuring the perfect level of thickness was achieved.

The ultimate goal for El Departamento was to reach the threshold where texture transcends into topography. This delicate balance was achieved through a manual and methodical process, carefully navigating each stage to attain the desired state of perfection.

Stainless steel plays a crucial role in the store, forming clusters of display shelves that encase every pair of glasses. The smooth and lustrous surface of the metal beautifully contrasts with the intentionally textured walls, creating an eye-catching visual effect. Adding to the mix of textures is the central counter, resembling a sleek capsule, boasting a glossy finish that reflects light and a mirrored top.

The outcome, as described by El Departamento, is a dynamic space that effortlessly transitions between the gentle and the solid, the rugged and the smooth.
